It's a game, pretty popular with teenagers. It's an excuse to have a girl hold onto you or to show off, after all. There's some kind of task, like going to pick up something left in a graveyard, walking through a given path in a haunted area. Sometimes, people dress up or try to scare the people doing it. I did a few tests of courage when I was younger.

For the record, I was great at them.
